How to Ask Where a Relationship Is Going
Been dating for months without knowing where it's going? Learn how to ask for clarity without sounding needy, demanding, or turning it into an ultimatum.

Six months. Two birthdays. Plenty of dates. Hundreds of texts. And when someone asks, "So... what are you two?" you still have to think about how to explain it.
I've seen people get stuck in this kind of relationship limbo far too many times.
You like each other. There's attraction. You enjoy spending time together. Things seem to be progressing. Except they never actually progress. That's when the fear starts: "If I ask what they want, I'm going to sound needy."
And that's where the real problem begins.
Because while you're trying so hard not to scare the other person away, you're also communicating something else: you're willing to remain indefinitely in a situation where you don't know where you stand.
Before having the conversation, I would start with a more uncomfortable question: What do you want?
Not what you hope they'll say. Not the answer that would make the conversation easier. What are you actually looking for?
Once you're clear about that, choose the right moment. Have the conversation in person or over a call when you're both calm. Not in the middle of an argument, and definitely not through a massive text message at two in the morning.
And say it simply:
"I like what we have, and that's why I want to be clear with you. I'm looking for something that can develop into a relationship. I'm not asking you to make a decision this second, but I do want to know whether we're moving in the same direction."
Then comes the difficult part: stop talking.
Don't rush to fill the silence. Don't apologize for asking. Don't immediately start explaining why "it's totally fine" if they don't want the same thing.
An honest "I don't know" can be valid. Once.
But after six months, an indefinite "I don't know" starts becoming an answer of its own.
Asking for clarity isn't the same as pressuring someone. It's refusing to keep negotiating against yourself.
